What a remarkable book. What a remarkable life.
Reading The Seven Story Mountain feels like sitting across from Thomas Merton himself, and listening to him tell you his life story over a cup of tea. Merton’s journey to find meaning and peace led him in many directions, from the cinema to communism to Catholicism, and ultimately to join a Trappist Monastery.
His writing flows with ease and clarity, never boring and never dense. Despite being published over 70 years ago, the wisdom this book dishes out feels extremely relevant. I can see myself returning to these pages many times in the future.
