After many years since it was first introduced into mainstream U.S. culture, Transcendental Meditation (TM) still attracts many seekers to its beliefs and practices. Vail Carruth was one of them. In this book she candidly reveals how she was drawn to TM in the early 60s and even advanced to the point of teaching it.

But something wasn't quite right. TM promised relaxation, but it turned her inward, and she became self-sufficient, proud, and insensitive to the needs of others. TM promised her inner peace, but she didn't experience a personal knowledge of God.

VAIL CARRUTH received a BA in Fine Art from the University of California, Berkeley and studied music at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She is a former teacher of TM who now shares her experiences in the movement with diverse audiences. Vail lives with her husband Joe, son David, and Josh who is an "unofficially adopted" member of their family, along with D.J., who is now on his own.
